Crammerock 2013: The Art of leaving a small Footprint

Belgian music festival Crammerock has raised the level of its progressive agenda to become one of the more sustainable and environmentally friendly festivals with Planet-People-Profit, the triple bottom line for corporate social responsibility. Moreover Crammerock is striving to be climate neutral, balancing out their negative impact with an equal amount of positive impact.

The festival, located between the towns of Antwerp and Gent, had its first edition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the local youth center  ‘de Cramme’, but Crammerock has since then become a two day festival with national and international acts, able to compete with other major festivals. This year’s line-up:

Curbing your carbon footprint by art seduction is an innovative idea:  Crammerock has challenged young artists to transform boring bins into exclusive eye catchers. So lose your trash in art!

Free drinks can be earned by collecting plastic cups and bottles, made of recyclable PET. PET is chosen (over Polylactic acid/PLA) because it’s chemically very stable and can be completely recycled and made into cups for next year.  The catering on the festival grounds will be using a great deal of ecological products. And it might not seem very revolutionary, but it’s stands out: in the backstage area Crammerock is making use of traditional washable kitchen utensils, as well as drinking glasses.

Crammerock handles strict guidelines for waste management and recycling on site for their caterers, volunteers and festivalgoers The eco boys ‘n girls of the special G-team keep the grounds tidy and monitor the recycling on the festival grounds, as well as backstage. After all: Zien doen, doet doen.  A expression that encourages to live by example.

Want to share a car? Register with Eventpool on the Crammerock site. Here you’re able to offer or ask for car space. And if you prefer to travel by train, free shuttles are waiting at the station to drive you to and from the festival grounds.
